What Is Meniscus Surgery?

A meniscus tear can occur due to a traumatic event or degeneration. Meniscus surgeon. The treatment for a torn meniscus aims to preserve the knee’s cushion pads and reduce the risk of future knee arthritis. This surgery is usually performed on younger patients whose menisci have a sufficient blood supply or during an ACL reconstruction. The surgeon will use an arthroscopic procedure to sew the meniscus back together, known as torn meniscus surgery.

If the tear is in the outer one-third of the meniscus or is a larger tear that can be repaired surgically, a combination of arthroscopic and open surgery is used. This procedure involves making small incisions on either side of the knee to repair the damaged area after the arthroscopic procedure. The surgeon will place strong sutures through the tear to bring the tissue back together and secure the meniscus.

If the meniscus has a small symptomatic tear, a tear in the inner third of the meniscus, or if it is torn beyond repair, a partial meniscectomy may be performed. The goal of this surgery is to remove only the damaged area of the tear while smoothing down the remaining meniscus area to prevent further tearing.
